Healing the Digestive System & Related Ailments with the GAPS Diet
Neurologist and well-known nutritionist Natasha Campbell-McBride, M.D. created the GAPS diet. Dr. Campbell-McBride and the professionals she trained have successfully helped people recover from a wide array of illnesses that arose from digestive issues. She explains how a healthy and resilient gut microbiome is essential for immune function. In detail, she illustrates the ways in which the digestive system microbiome facilitates the digestion, assimilation, and absorption of nutrients; metabolism; and neurotransmitter production and transport. With these physiological processes in mind, she designed the GAPS diet to reduce inflammation, support the gut lining, and encourage microbial diversity. (Campbell-McBride, 2023).

Dr. Campbell-McBride is a leader in the field of healing with natural foods. She brought to light connections between the functions of the digestive system and the brain. In developing the GAPS diet, she drew on her work helping hundreds of children and adults recover from neurological and psychiatric conditions, including: autistic spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD/ADD), schizophrenia, dyslexia, dyspraxia, depression, obsessive –compulsive disorder, bi-polar disorder, and other neuro-psychological and psychiatric problems. By adhering to Dr. Campbell-McBride’s dietary recommendations and protocols, people found relief from physical ailments including: Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, colitis, celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes type one, multiple sclerosis, asthma, allergies, eczema, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic infections, and endocrine disorders. Using the GAPS diet, targeted supplementation, detoxification, and lifestyle changes, Dr. Campbell-McBride put together a holistic approach that has proven to restore digestive function, brain function, and overall health (Campbell-McBride, 2023)
